Buying an Asset

Asset Jam!

Well I broke down and bought the Corgi Controller 2D. I couldn't resist the temptation to try a paid asset that tons of people seemed to like. Over the years I've always thought it would be great to build everything from the ground up, but I'm finding I really want to get on with the making the game part and less writing the scripts part.

I was clearly unprepared for such a big influx of assets. For someone new like me this is an overwhelming amount of things that all tie together. It's not really a bad thing, but it's definitely going to be a long process to wrap my head around how these things work. I'm not super enthusiastic about just reskinning a demo scene, although it would be good practice. I think there a lot of really good components to work with, but I was standing at the precipice wondering if I really wanted to drop $60 on this asset. $60 is nothing to sneeze at when I could pick up a new game from my wishlist, but I certainly don't have a shortage of things to play, especially since I've been spending more time each week working on my own project.

Overall the process to buy an asset was really smooth. I downloaded the latest version of Unity, and imported the asset from the package manager into a new project. It's really nice to see what a packed scene looks like with all of the different objects working together, even though I don't fully understand how everything is working. I had to look up a video on just how to even begin using the Corgi Controller. There's also a Discord group for it, but I'm always hesitant to ask others for advice. Maybe if I get deeper into it and really hit some snags will I try to ask for help. Right now, I need to try working with it before I bother anyone.

If I want to work towards a particular goal I suppose it would be to create my own art assets and begin applying the Corgi Controller to them. I was impressed with how long this asset has been around and the amount of support that seems to be available. I have some anxiety about the asset no longer being supported when a new version of Unity drops, but it's nice that I have access to all the scripts for reference.
