I suppose there's no better time than the present to get over being a noob. I'm not even sure how I came across the game jam section on Itch. Maybe I was just thinking that should be the motivation for me to create something outside other ideas I've been kicking around. I'm excited to take on the challenge and be forced to limit my scope to meet the criteria in the timeframe. This particular jam is 2 weeks long, so that should be easier to work with than the weekend jams I've heard about.
The rules for this jam seemed pretty relaxed and I decided to meet the challenge of an adventure game. I'd take a stab at a text based adventure which I've always thought I'd be able to easily create if I just put in enough time. Turns out the coding is out of my skill level to write without a guide, but thankfully not too bad to follow along. Unity has maintained a live training course from years ago, thankfully. Here's the playlist.
This is something I have to deal with at work: "I don't know how to fix this right now, but I want to figure it out." I need to accept that I can't fix something on the first try and walking away for a time is okay. A desire to want to keep learning and accepting failure is proving to be more helpful than listening to hours of tutorials.
I'm going to keep practicing before the jam begins and I'm looking forward to see what other people create. I was surprised to see how sophisticated some text based adventures were after trying to create something basic. I'm definitely going to have to keep the scope narrow if I want to add anything fun like audio and pixel art.
