Ballooning Scope

Date: 2023-05-29

After going back and forth about the type of game I wanted to try to make for the jam, I decided to make use of the Corgi engine to try to make a 2D platformer and hopefully it's enough of an adventure to qualify. When I realized how many technical challenges existed for the text adventure, and how little documentation was out there, I was a lot less enthusiastic. Did I already say that I don't care much for text adventures? My exposure to some of the earliest games were on Nintendo and SNES so my nostalgia is for pixel art, rather than text only. I appreciate those early games, but I don't care as much for only text. I like coming up with backstories and imaging intro cutscenes. Besides, this is the kick in the pants I was looking for to get over the anxiety of making something bad.

I'm still procrastinating, but I've started trying to wrap my head around adapting Corgi 2D assets and imaging how the whole thing can come together. It's so much easier to come up with ideas that quickly inflate the scope of the project. It takes so much work to work on individual pieces of the project.

The game jam started this past friday and it's two weeks long. I don't know how people can crank out something in a weekend. Maybe if I knew some others that could handle big parts of the project.
