Mid Jam Tilemap Break

Basic Tilemap Rules for a 2D Platformer

Holy moly, making games is really difficult, and I'm not even making anything revolutionary. The corgi engine is making things a lot easier by giving me the opportunity to compare what I'm working to something complete.

This procrastination post is due to my excessive time spent trying to make a tilemap. All the time spent feels necessary for what I what to accomplish for the game jam, and what I want to accomplish for future projects. Tilemaps make the process of laying out a level much easier, but the rules blew my mind in how you're not having to go back and forth to the pallete. Without the rule, it kinda feels like making pixel art, but having to go back to the pallete for every color on every pixel.

I spent so much time and pushed through the frustration of figuring out the tilemap rules for a basic 2D platformer that I had to take a few minutes and document it. The green sides, would be the allowed, and red disallowed. This is what it looks like in Unity.

I'm not sure where the diagonals are required, and I'm not sure when to leave a square empty rather than putting an X.

I've been taking breaks about midday, which is about all I can take on the frustration level and also keeping my hands tense over my keyboard and wacom tablet. Even though I spend most of my time in front of a computer, I'm not usually as tense for hours without breaks. Just one more week left and back to work next week.
